Replacement covers or new cushions: where to start
A beautiful finish begins beneath the fabric. Understand when to discuss new covers, replacement foam or a complete cushion set.

THE FEEL / THE FIT / THE FINISH
Keep the seating you love. Shape the replacement around its curves, openings and fixings.
Identify each cover, its fastening and its orientation. Discuss whether the existing foam can be retained before patterns are agreed.

Colour is only the beginning. Compare the material in the light of your space, then consider the cushion profile and the finish at its edges.

YOUR SPECIFICATION / PRACTICAL ANSWERS
The cover, foam profile and fixing system must be assessed together. An old cover alone may have stretched or been altered, so the pattern method is agreed for your pieces.
Yes, a contrasting or coordinated piping direction can be discussed with the main material. Confirm the effect with physical samples and the proposed seam layout.
A tired-looking cover and a tired-feeling cushion are different problems. Before selecting a new fabric, look at the existing profile, support and fit. Photograph the seating in place so Josh can see how the pieces meet the boat or furniture, then describe what you want to change: the look, the feel, or both.
If the foam still feels comfortable and holds its intended shape, replacement covers may be worth discussing. The existing foam needs assessment before that route is agreed. A loose or distorted old cover should not automatically become the pattern: it may no longer represent the original dimensions.
Tell Josh where support feels uneven, where an edge has collapsed or where the cushion no longer fills its cover. Include side views rather than only photographs from above. Thickness, shape and the way the cushion rests on its base all belong in the brief; the final foam specification follows that conversation.
A new seating arrangement, changed seat bases or several inconsistent pieces may call for a coordinated set. List each cushion by position. Show corner joins, locker access, attachments and pieces that lift away. For garden furniture, include the frame and the depth available for back and seat cushions.
Send overall photographs, top and underside views, approximate dimensions, your location and the preferred work window. Keep the old pieces until the measurement and patterning route is agreed. Covers, foam, piping and any border stitching can then be developed as one considered specification.
Start with replacement covers if the support and original fit still suit you. Ask Josh to assess whether the current foam can be retained.
Show sagging, uneven support or flattened edges. Discuss a foam and cover specification together rather than hiding the problem beneath new fabric.
For altered bases or a coordinated set, capture every join, access point and fixing. A new pattern route may be needed.
