A CLOSER LOOK / PERSONALLY CONSIDERED

From swatch to seating.

Colour is only the beginning. Compare the material in the light of your space, then consider the cushion profile and the finish at its edges.

  • Material. Confirm the precise collection and feel using physical samples.
  • Construction. Agree the pattern, cushion depth and fastening details.
  • Finish. Bring piping, seams and border stitching into one direction.

OCEAN BREEZE JOURNAL / PROJECT GUIDANCE

Planning a Yacht Upholstery Refit: Samples to Fitting

Coordinate seating, approvals, patterns, manufacturing and fitting with your captain, designer or yard before a yacht upholstery refit begins.

Make an area schedule before a colour schedule.

List the cockpit, helm, flybridge, sunpads and interior seating that need work. For each area, identify what stays, what changes and whether the pieces are fixed or removable. Include associated joinery or base alterations. This keeps the brief connected without treating every cushion as the same construction.

Photograph the retained surroundings and collect existing drawings where available. Define one person who can gather access information and a separate approval authority if the owner, designer or captain has different responsibilities.

Agree the decision points.

Shortlist materials and finishing details, then review physical samples. Establish who signs off foam, cover construction, colour, piping, thread and border layout. A written material schedule reduces ambiguity when several areas are being renewed.

Do not assume that starting manufacture can absorb later changes without affecting the plan. Agree how specification changes are reviewed and confirmed, especially after patterns are established or material is ordered.

Coordinate surveying with other trades.

Seat-base and joinery changes can affect final patterns. Give Josh the wider work sequence so measurements are taken at an appropriate stage. A 3D scan can support selected surveys, but the actual openings, mounting points and fit still need suitable checks.

For international work, separate the survey location from the installation location. Provide yard access requirements, intended vessel movements and who will receive and check the finished pieces. Travel and any return visit are individually agreed.

Plan handover as part of the job.

Identify who is responsible for removal, labelling, packing, transport and installation. If components are sent away, keep an area list and photographic record. Agree who checks the final fit and how any issue is reported.

Ask for the selected material references and appropriate care guidance at handover. Keep the approved specification and any care record with the yacht’s project information so the next maintenance decision starts from facts.

Useful questions.

Can a yard deadline guarantee an upholstery completion date?

No. Share the intended deadline early so the scope, approvals, material availability and production plan can be assessed. Timing is confirmed for the commission.

Can several yacht areas use one coordinated palette?

Yes. Colour and finishing details can connect them, while the foam, profile and material suitability are reviewed separately for each area.

Apply it to your project.
