01Describe the current sitting feel+
Show the cushion from the side while installed and explain what feels wrong: bottoming out, too much height, a deep seat or poor back support. Separate those observations from a guessed foam specification.
02Check the furniture relationships+
Measure the usable seat depth, back position and any table or arm clearance. Raising the seat can reduce back support or knee room; a thicker loose back can also take away sitting space.
03Agree the complete construction+

No. Comfort depends on the support and shape as well as the furniture and personal preference. Explain the problem you want to solve rather than specifying depth alone.
Can I keep the covers and put thicker inserts inside?
That needs assessment. Existing covers may not accommodate a different depth or shape without excessive tension, distorted seams or an unsuitable fit.
