A protective cover goes over the boat or equipment. Its brief is different from the upholstered cover fitted around a seat cushion: supports, openings, storage and fastening locations all belong in the plan.

01Define the covered area+
Show the boat from both sides and identify exactly what needs sheltering. A cockpit enclosure, mooring cover and loose seating protector are different scopes; include any existing framework.
02Plan support and openings+
Photograph raised fittings, rails and areas where the existing cover pools or rubs. Tell Josh how you enter the boat and remove the cover. Drainage, ventilation and clearance need to be resolved in the complete design.
03Specify the intended use+
Say whether the cover is used at a berth, in storage or for another purpose. A storage cover must not be assumed suitable for towing. Material, supports and fixings must be agreed for the intended application.

Can you copy my old cover?
An old cover can inform the pattern, but shrinkage, stretching and changed fittings may affect its accuracy. Include fitted photographs and explain where you want the design to work differently.
Does a water-repellent fabric make the whole cover waterproof?
The finished result also depends on seams, openings, shape, fixings and how water drains. Josh will confirm the specification for the complete cover rather than promising performance from a fabric label alone.

PROTECTIVE BOAT COVERS
The outer layer. Precisely considered.
A protective cover starts with its intended use and the boat’s shape. An upholstery fabric and a cover fabric serve different purposes.
01Define the use＋
Tell Josh whether the cover is for a boat at its berth, laid-up storage or another agreed use. Do not assume a storage cover is suitable for towing.
02Capture the obstacles＋
Show rails, screens, consoles and existing fastenings. An old cover is a useful reference, but stretch or shrinkage can make it an unreliable pattern.
03Approve the specification＋
Agree the cover fabric, seams, openings and attachment approach. Support poles, replacement hardware and installation are included only where specified.
