A removable cover needs more than a discreet zip. Its opening must suit the insert and remain reachable once the cushion is used, with the construction agreed before the pattern is finalised.

01Start with the insert that must pass through+
Show the full cushion shape and explain whether the filling is firm, shaped or assembled in sections. An opening that suits a small soft pad may be awkward for a large contoured insert.
02Choose a practical opening location+
Review the underside, rear border and nearby attachments. Agree where the opening will be concealed without placing it where a seat base, fixed panel or inaccessible corner prevents normal use.
03Match removability to the care plan+
Confirm whether the cover is intended for routine removal and follow the care instructions for the supplied material. Removable does not automatically mean machine-washable, and care for the insert may differ from care for the fabric.

Can an existing cushion have a longer zip added?
Possibly, after assessing the cover, seam allowances and condition. Send photographs of the present opening and explain the handling problem before assuming a modification will work.
Should every cushion have the zip in the same place?
No. Shape, attachment route and visibility can differ across a set. The opening position should be recorded for each relevant piece in the specification.
